There’s something magical about the process of recording your own music. It’s an opportunity to let your voice be heard in a way it never has before - in pristine fashion. We all stream songs endlessly on repeat not necessarily thinking about what goes into the arrangement, recording, and technical production of it. So much of the magic around audio production is the ability to constantly adapt a song in realtime as it builds track by track. I believe everyone should experience that excitement in their lifetime. Thankfully, the accessibility and simplicity of at-home studio projects has opened a world of possibilities for anyone to capture their music.
After college, many individuals put their passions aside only to find there is something missing in their daily life. I wasn’t ready to let that happen. Upon leaving Penn State I connected with a wonderful team of musicians at a company Cut Off Studios. I was hired as an arranger and clinician to work with A Cappella groups around the country. It was here that I began learning the ins and outs of audio production. My advice to all arrangers that simply can’t get enough - try recording one of your arrangements on your own! I’ve found that music production is the next step beyond arranging. It’s taking the leap to now create your music. You’ll learn arranging from the perspective of hearing your music in vitro to understand what it really sounds like.
A few years into working with Cut Off Studios, I became the lead Audio Engineer. During this time I helped oversee audio production for high school, collegiate, and semi-pro A Cappella groups. I was fortunate to work on some standout projects now featured on BOCA and Voices Only. I was also granted the opportunity to help educate over 20 interns and producers in the Cut Off Family. Every individual I’ve work with has helped me become the engineer I am today. As Cut Off Studios continues to grow, I felt the need to step away and set my own pace with kHz productions. I remain extremely grateful to the wonderful people of COS and my experiences with them.
Outside of Cut Off, I learned to the more niche skills such as podcast production, recorded family interviews, recording in a live setting, small business ownership, and how to host a legit karaoke night! While most of my experience has been recording singers, turns out instruments are just as fun! Helping turn an independent artists iPhone demo recordings into a full blown EP is exhilarating. It’s amazing how one small, spontaneous musical idea can help lay the groundwork for an entire song. At the end of the day, it’s the excitement of a new project and desire to create something impactful that inspires kHz Productions.
The journey of working as a producer is one of constant learning. Why? Because every song is unique to itself. As I work with new technologies, artists, and different genres - I gain insight for creating better music. At its core, learning audio production is a cycle of making mistakes and learning by doing. If it’s sounds good, it IS good! Mixing is an art and every artist has a unique vision. Finding balance between an artists’ vision and technical steps to get there are the challenges I take head on. For this reason, I am passionate about artist involvement and the education. I try give back as much as I can in the form of educational videos, feedback, and internships. As I continue to learn from my experiences, I take the time to reflect and share that knowledge with others. If you have ideas, know someone who wants to learn more, or want to collaborate, please reach out!
Despite my love for music and production, I have a full-time career in the medical Industry. I’ve worked for almost 10 years now in Cardiac Imaging and interventions. You don’t need to look too hard to find me nerding out about cardiac innovations and ultrasound technologies. I’ve found a balance in my life between careers of differing fundamentals. I continue to find overlap in lessons learned from something as common as communications skills to Spectral Frequency Analyzers and FET analytics. I reside now in Haverford PA with my wife and 2 cats, Mez and Tiki. When I’m not working I enjoy traveling, pigging out on greasy food, and staying physically active!
Special thank you to Family, loving wife Victoria, and friends Matt and Rachel for helping to support and inspire me along the way! Go birds 🦅
